Hugh Barker

Managing Director, Strategic Communications
FTI Consulting

Hugh Barker is a managing director in the Strategic Communications segment at FTI Consulting, and is based in New York. He also is part of the segment's Financial Communications practice.

After serving as the Financial Communications practice lead of the segment's MENASA (i.e., Middle East, North Africa, South Asia) region since 2008, Mr. Barker relocated to the firm's New York office to serve a pivotal role in globalizing the firm's cross-border, financial communications offering.

Mr. Barker provides counsel across a diverse range of sectors - including energy and natural resources; financial institutions; and telecom, media and technology - in the areas of bankruptcy and restructuring communications; crisis and issues management; equity and debt, capital-markets communications; initial-public offerings (IPO); investor relations (IR); private fundraising; and shareholder analysis and engagement.

His leadership and client management skills have resulted in the growth of many of the firm's IR and public relations client engagements out of the MENASA region - including Al Jaber Group, Commercial Bank of Qatar, DP World, Emirates Airlines, Indosat, The Investment Dar, Kuwait Airways, Kuwait Investment Authority, Mumtalakat, Oman Investment Fund (OIF), Ooredoo (formerly Qtel) and Wataniya Telecom.

His breadth of expertise in financial communications has helped several international corporations navigate through some of the Persian Gulf region's most notable financial events - including Asiacell's $1.3 billion IPO in 2013, the first Iraqi IPO since 2003; HSBC's merger with Oman International Bank (OIB); and the Chapter 11 restructuring of Arcapita. In the U.S., he has led the communications for Zebra Technology's $3.5 billion acquisition of Motorola's enterprise business; Santander Consumer's $2 billion IPO; and the repositioning of Investcorp's equity management arm in the domestic markets.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Barker served as an associate director at Pelham Public Relations in London, where he played a critical role in growing the firm's client list as the head of the firm's India team. In his two years at Pelham Public Relations, he led the firm's new-business efforts to secure 11 key client wins; and advised on several fundraising and transactions valued at a cumulative $4 billion.

Mr. Barker's previous experience also includes an account executive role at Abchurch Communications, and an account manager role at Chime Communications - both in London. He holds a master's with honors in history of art - 2:1 from University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
